Chapter Nineteen

That morning, Rain boarded the Cessna with Jake for the flight to Freeport. She was going there to meet with Black to tell him what she had learned about Pablo Garza and his involvement with Rodrigo Iñíguez. They were wheels up at six and by six twenty-five, Rain was bored.

As she sat there, Rain began thinking about what Black had said to her about Nick.

Nick is on a different path. It won’t be long before he is completely legit and married to April.

At the time when Black said it, she was too caught up in the words, you’re the boss of this family now, to react or even think about it. But now, with time on her hands, Rain had time to think about how she felt about it.

She loved Nick once, and on days when she’d let her guard down, she would quietly admit to herself that despite the fact that Nick was no good for her, she still did love him. That thought alone was enough to make her feel weak.

And I hate feeling weak.

Rain unbuckled her seatbelt and began walking toward the cockpit.

“Hey, Rain,” Jake said when the door opened.

“What’s up Jake?”

“Something I can get for you?”

“No,” Rain said, “But do you mind if I sit up here with you? I was lonely back there by myself.”

“Sure, boss,” Jake said.

“Stop calling me that.”

“Okay,” Jake laughed. “Have a seat and I’ll teach you how to fly this bad boy.”

“Really?” Rain said excitedly and hurried to sit down.

After Jake took his time pointing out and explaining what everything was and what it did, he took the plane off of auto-pilot and said, “She’s all yours.”

“Okay, what do I do?”

“You raise the nose of the airplane by pulling the control wheel toward you. What that’s gonna do is make the airplane climb or make it stall if you pull back too far.”

“Okay.”

“Pitch changes speed, power changes altitude.”

“What is pitch?”

“An aircraft in flight is free to rotate in three dimensions. Pitch, nose up or down about an axis running from wing to wing. Yaw, nose left or right about an axis running up and down, and roll, rotation about an axis running from nose to tail.”

“I don’t understand what half that shit means,” Rain said as she gripped the wheel tightly, “but okay.”

Jake laughed. “The left rudder…”

“The what?”

“The left peddle.”

“Oh.”

“You use the left rudder to keep the plane coordinated. Same thing to turn right, but use the right controls.”

“Got ya.”

“Now use the throttle control to help the airplane climb and control your speed. Push the control wheel away from you and reduce power to descend.”

“Got it.”

“Turn the control wheel left to raise the right wing. That will make the plane bank to the left.”

“Bank?”

“It’s gonna make the plane turn left. Go ahead, try it.”

Rain turned the wheel to the left. “Oh shit! I did that! I’m flying!” she screamed with joy.

As they got close to Freeport, Jake took over the controls and handled the landing with Rain serving as his co-pilot.
